I'm about to update from ICS to JB as my phone is alerting me to download the update, I want to backup Cut the Rope and various of those 100 Doors type games. The last time I updated from Gingerbread to ICS, I don't think it kept my save games, and neither did my backup to My Backup Pro, at least, that I can recall (I didn't have many games installed then). My Backup Pro just saved the games but not the save files.
My SGS2 isn't rooted and all the apps I found for backing up game save data say the phone needs to be rooted. Is there a one size fits all game save file backup app that doesn't need rooting? I've also read of people who updated from ICS to JB on the galaxy S3 and the Note where they said their game data wasn't affected, might this be true of the SGS2 when I update?

I found a Cut the Rope file called 'ctr.zsf' on my phone under sdcard/ZeptoLab/Cut the Rope/ctr.zsf. Is this the save games file and can I just manually save it to my PC and trandfer it back after the update? I've no idea where the save files are for my other games.

Try Helium (previously Carbon) backup. It doesn't require root. :)

Or either Titanium backup - Just chose backup app(s) with data

Read the first post, he isn't rooted, so he can't use Titanium.

When I updated to JB I kept all my saves so I wouldn't worry if I were you :)

And the .zsf file doesn't seem to be a save file...

Thanks for the replies guys, and Bryanvdst, that sounds promising then, hopefully I won't lose my save games.

But is backing up with Helium as mentioned by immortalneo more likely to retain save games than using My Backup Pro?

I have no experience with either of them, but Helium seems to get good reviews, so I'd probably go with that if I were you.

Keep in mind though that nothing beats Titanium. I know you're not rooted but everyone will be recommending it to you haha.

Titanium > Helium > Any other backup app

If ur updating via OTA or Kies, you probably won't lose ur game data. :)

Ok I've installed Helium on my PC and the phone and android drivers on my PC, enabled various things on the phone like usb debugging and now I'm ready to backup. Scrolling through the list of apps selected for backup, I don't see Email, or Contacts or the Memo app where I have dozens of saved memos. So I can't back those up too? It does show SMS and Call Logs to be backed up though.

U usually don't need to backup email, because all ur mails will be online right?

As for contacts, Google Sync is best (unless u have contacts saved on the Phone and not ur gmail account). Or u can simply export ur contacts to SD card (there is an option in the Contacts app menu), and then re-import them.

Memo can be backed up using Kies I guess. I have a bad history with that app, and have never used it ever again! :D

You're right actually, I can just redownload my email.
Yes, my contacts and calendar events are all on my google account online. But I'm always worried that if I reset the phone or update the software which might delete contacts and calendar events from the phone, that it might in some way erase contacts and calendar events from google. I guess it won't though? :fingers-crossed:

Nope, it won't. I do it all the time! :)

To be safe, u can still make manual backups or use apps from the Playstore like Super Backup.
